Kimberly-Clark Invests Over £125m in UK Green Hydrogen Projects for Decarbonization

2025-07-28

Recently, Kimberly-Clark, together with its energy partners Carlton Power and HYRO, will invest over £125 million in emerging energy projects at its two factories located in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria and Northfleet, Kent in the UK. Among them, Carlton Power's Barrow Green Hydrogen Project obtained local planning permission in June 2023, while HYRO's innovative project at the Northfleet paper mill was approved by the local council and received planning permission in August 2024.

The hydrogen energy projects in Barrow and Northfleet will supply 100 GWh and 47 GWh of hydrogen annually respectively. By replacing natural gas with hydrogen, a total of 28,500 tons of carbon emissions can be reduced each year. These two factories collectively produce nearly 1 billion rolls of Andrex toilet paper and over 150 million boxes of Kleenex tissues annually.

Through this investment, Kimberly-Clark expects that the natural gas consumption of its UK production lines will be reduced by 50% compared with that in 2024 starting from 2027. These projects will further promote the decarbonization process of household paper production. Kimberly-Clark UK & Ireland will also become the first major consumer goods company in the UK to make significant investments in green hydrogen energy.
